Sumners Grant Information

The Sumners Foundation
In 1977, Mrs. E. H. Sumners leased 20,000 acres of timberland to Weyerhaeuser Company, establishing the Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Sumners Trust in memory of her late husband. The timber was sold off of the land and the proceeds used for scholarships of students who are residents of Choctaw County and four other counties where the Sumners’ timber business was centered. The amount awarded varies depending on the income from the trust and the number of students enrolled in each institution from the designated counties. To receive the grant, students must meet college entrance requirements and live in Choctaw or other awarded counties. To remain eligible, a student must maintain satisfactory academic progress, a C average or better. Part-time students may receive a prorated share of the annual award depending on the number of semester hours for which they are enrolled. Contact the financial aid office of the participating institution for a Sumners Grant application and guidelines for receiving the award.

The Sumners Foundation

The Sumners Foundation is one of the largest private educational funds in the state.  Virtually any student who is a resident of Choctaw County, passes the college entrance exam, and maintains a C average or better may receive tuition assistance at one of four institutes of higher learning in the state – Millsaps College, Holmes Community College, Mississippi State University, and the University of Mississippi.
